Hypertrophy (enlargement) of the masseter (bite) muscle can lead to the appearance of a square jaw, another side effect of bruxism.
Treatment with botulinum toxin can provide tremendous relief from jaw soreness, ear ache, headache and other symptoms.
Botulinum toxin can also soften and slim the jawline by reducing the size of the bite muscle.
Although dental devices can successfully protect teeth from nighttime damage for bruxism sufferers, they do not address the underlying causes.
By injecting small doses of botulinum toxin directly into the masseter/ bite muscle, the muscle is weakened enough to stop involuntary teeth grinding and jaw clenching. This relaxation reduces the wear and tear on your teeth and relieves the painful symptoms.
Voluntary actions such as chewing and facial expression are unaffected. Although not a cure, botulinum toxin can effectively control symptoms for 3-4 months, and often longer, in my experience.
